Ensure ongoing compliance in Oral Health Care

Ensure care staff who provide daily personal care understand the importance of oral health and the potential affect if can have on their general health. That they know how to deliver oral care.  Training for staff with dementia or communication difficulties. (NICE)

Demonstrate that you are serious about oral health for your residents by having ongoing oral care training so that your staff are better equipped at delivering best practice mouth care.

Your role in supporting residents

As a person's ability to care for their teeth and dentures gets harder, so does the general health of their mouth unless they have the support of those who care for them. It is important to acknowledge that certain circumstances can render an individual more susceptible to developing oral health problems.

Care home staff play a vital role in supporting and assisting service users to maintain their oral health as far as possible. This may extend beyond basic oral hygiene and incorporate a wide range of preventative strategies.

Unfortunately oral health issues are often overlooked and therefore oral health needs to become integrated into holistic health policy at all levels and must be included in every individual care plan.

Good oral health care is important for:

  • Overall health

  • Prevention and of oral pain and suffering

  • Adequate nutrition

  • Quality of life and comfort

  • Communication, socialization and appearance

'Ensure that care staff are trained to understand mouth care needs, to carry out the assessment and that staff should be aware of signs of dental ill health.' NG48(NICE)
